Russia tonight threatened to retaliate by military means after a deal with the Czech Republic brought the US missile defence system in Europe a step closer. The claim is that this missile system will not target Russia, but will act as a safeguard for Europe against regimes such as Iran.
The threat followed quickly on from the announcement that Condoleezza Rice signed a formal agreement with the Czech Republic to host the radar for the controversial project.
“We will be forced to react not with diplomatic, but with military-technical methods,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
What in the world are we doing here? Using our tax dollars and our equipment to protect EUROPE from Iran? Let the Europeans - very few of whom like us anyway - defend themselves from Iran.
Ask yourself... Just how is Iran a threat to Europe?
Go look at a world map. You will see that Poland and the Czech Republic is NORTH and EAST of Europe, while Iran is way SOUTH and EAST of Europe. What we have is a triangle, the left bottom point being Europe, the right bottom point being Iran, and the top of the triangle is where the missile system would sit, way up in the north forty, as they say, far off the beaten path. You may also notice that the system is being placed smack on Russia's western doorstep. The Russians have noticed that also.
If we were really building a missile system to protect Europe from Iran, we'd put it somewhere much further south, maybe Turkey, to effectively intercept the flight paths of those Iranian missiles.
It's all insane. And we're paying for it. Not only with our tax dollars, but with an highly elevated risk of war with Russia. And that war would be nothing like the one in Iraq. It would be a BIG war.
The real bottom line:
Don't lose too much sleep over this... My money says they will end up compromising to placate the Russians, all a part of the big show, and put the system in Israel, the place they really want to protect from Iran.
No big war with Russia, no missile defense for Europe, just more military muscle for Israel.
It's all a giant shell game... with your money.
