PENSACOLA BEACH, Florida (Reuters) - For decades opposition to oil drilling off Florida's coast was one of the few issues uniting the state's Democrats and Republicans, who agreed that shielding the environment and the huge tourism industry came first. For crying out loud, somebody tell all those Florida tree-hugging beachbums that the continental shelf is miles and miles out to sea, and that nobody - particularly all those retirees from New York City - will be able to see an oil rig unless they fly over it in an airplane!
Not now, as oil prices rise and U.S. motorists are paying serious prices at gasoline pumps...
What some see as a crack in the protective shield for Florida's $57 billion tourism industry has drawn howls of protest from Democrats and environmental groups.
