An exclusive KIRO 7 Investigation reveals an alarming number of Apple brand iPod MP3 players have suddenly burst into flames and smoke, injuring people and damaging property.Pretty simple. The more capability these things have, the more power they require. The power comes from a very small battery. If the battery has even a microscopic flaw, it can end up as a short circuit. Short circuits generate massive amounts of heat. This can happen even if your iPod is turned off.
It's not an issue about capability, it's an issue of trying to manufacture smaller and smaller batteries containing more and more power.
It's not a clear and present danger. The chance of your handheld exploding is rare indeed. However, if you replace the original battery with one that may not have been built by a reputable manufacturer, you can cause your odds against an explosion to nosedive quickly.
When these batteries start getting manufactured by the lowest bidder somewhere in Lower Slobivia where quality control is only a concept, look forward to more of them going up in smoke... Or worse.
These batteries have to be manufactured under the highest clean room standards, lest they become a small bomb. It's happened far more often than we realize.
