Those Iranian "gunboats", or whatever they were, should have been blown out of the water, period.
After the Cole incident, our ships should have the final say-so in these kinds of situations, and any Captain worth his stripes will protect his crew and vessel.
The quick sinking of those Iranian boats would have ensured that there would be no more such challenges to our ships. Playing cat-and-mouse with them almost guarantees an inevitable escalation until those morons actually attack one of our ships.
Morons? Of course. Who in their right mind would play chicken with a United States warship using a speedboat? Only a moron... or someone who was positive there would be no response.
And if those boys were positive they were safe from retaliation, there is much more to this incident than we are being told.
