JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert visited Israel's main nuclear reactor on Tuesday, setting off a round of commentaries in Israeli media about Israel's intentions toward Iran and its nuclear program.Israel's main nuclear reactor? So how many reactors does teeny tiny Israel have? How many WMD's do they have?
Israel itself is widely assumed to have an arsenal of nuclear weapons developed at the Dimona facility. Details and pictures leaked in 1986 to the Sunday Times of London by a renegade former Dimona employee, nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu, led experts to conclude Israel has the world's sixth-largest stockpile of nuclear weapons, including hundreds of warheads. If true, that's just plain frightening. Try to imagine that bunch of fanatics armed with hundreds of WMD's.
So here we sit on our thumbs while Israel - a fly speck on the map with several nuclear reactors and possibly hundreds of WMD's - want s to obliterate Iran's one reactor, while at the same time rejecting the conclusion of a recent U.S. intelligence report that Iran stopped its nuclear weapons program several years ago.
Ever stop to wonder why both the Dems and the Repubs have no real big guns in this presidential race? Because the next president will have to account for an Israel that has finally gone nuts and triggered death and misery beyond imagination. No savvy American politician wants to be straddled with a legacy like that. Let the lightweights, Obama or McCain, take the heat. One of them surely will.
